Dog tags
If you are putting dog tags on your dogs, make sure the
information is helpful in the event that your dog gets lost or runs
away. The main reason for dog tags is to allow someone who finds your
dog an opportunity to be able to find you – the owner. Include:
• Name – If your dog runs away, the finder can learn the
dog’s name. This will help the finder and the dog to develop some
kind of a relationship of trust, because it will put the dog at ease
to hear his own name said.
• Address – The address is one of the important parts of
contact information that can be found on the dog tags. If the address
is included, all the finder of the dog really needs to do is put the
dog in his car and drive to the address listed. It is important to remember
that if you move, you need to change the dog tags to reflect the new
address as well. Forgetting to do this could cause problems.
• Phone number – It might be best to include a cell phone
number on the dog tags because it is more likely that the person who
finds the dog will be able to get a hold of you. The sooner a person
can contact you, the better the chances are of having your dog returned
to you.
• Allergies – If your dog has certain allergies, it is
important to list these allergies. A well-intentioned person who finds
the dog might want to give the dog something it should not have. But
if you have the allergies listed, there is less of a chance this will
happen.
