Dog food

Dog food is something that many new dog owners do not know a lot about. Likewise, they are not sure what the best way is to feed their dogs and to get them to enjoy the food. Here are a few tips:

• After your dog has finished growing and is no longer a puppy, the meals should come less frequently. Feeding a grown dog more than once or twice a day is definitely sufficient. If you feed an older dog too much, he may appear to you to be a fussy eater. However, the truth is more likely that he is simply full and does not want to eat any more.

• Make a schedule – It is probably best to present the dog food at the same time each day. When you do this you will be able to let the dog know when to expect food. Also, because you do not want to overfeed your dog, it is always good to wait 24 hours in between feedings. That way he or she has a full day to eat the food.

• It’s not polite to stare – Just as you do not particularly enjoy people watching you eat, your dog does not like you standing around waiting for him to eat his dog food. His gut reaction will be that there is something wrong and he therefore will most likely not eat the food. Just put it into his dish and walk away. He’ll eat when he wants to.

• Be consistent – If you give your dog a new meal and he refuses to eat it, do not simply give him a treat instead. If your dog knows that he will not get anything else to eat, he will eat the dog food you lay out for him.
